About Richard

I particularly appreciate abstract painting due the incredibly wide latitude it affords in terms of creative expression— there are basically no rules. Much of my process entails building up and selectively tearing back paint layers. Early layers are extremely loose, uncontrolled, and often rather messy. Later stages are more constrained and responsive to the existing image. Each painting evolves and becomes an effort to impose coherency in color, value balance, and composition. Like some other abstract painters, I feel the greatest challenge is suspending my critical judgement and just letting my process play out. I like painting with both acrylics and oil. My oil paintings usually incorporate cold wax medium (beeswax), which increases viscosity and translucency, and helps facilitate layering and application techniques.

I’ve been fortunate to spend the majority of my career working closely with and learning from extremely creative and talented people, engaged in designing and making new things. I don’t think there’s anything more fun or exciting in the corporate environment than creating new products. I’m convinced that each of us has within us the ability to be highly creative. I also believe the vast majority of us have a genuine desire to express that creativity in some way. So I strongly encourage people to let loose and commit to doing something that allows your creative abilities and talents to speak in some way.
